Due to the nature of the packaging all three bale sizes can be stored either indoors or outdoors, though we recommend storing haylage out of direct sunlight in the hot summer months. Bales must be kept free of damage and particular care must be taken to ensure accidental damage cannot be caused by birds, dogs, cats or other animals.

However, unopened haylage that is not damaged and kept out of direct sunlight may last 12 months.

Although, we recommend that you use your haylage within 6 months of purchase.

Baillie Haylage Handy Bales do not pull apart in slices, however, if you open a bale by slitting it down the long side then the haylage will pull apart easily.

Baillie Haylage Medium and Large Bales are best opened by creating a flap in the plastic; to do this cut down the side edges and along the top of the end of a bale. Once the strings have been cut the bale will easily pull apart in slices and the flap will protect the haylage from the elements.

In hot weather and when haylage is young handy bale bags may expand or ‘blow up’. This is very normal behaviour for the haylage and the bale will shrink back down as the weather cools without altering the quality of the product.

If you prefer to ‘vent’ the gas from the bag rather than waiting for the bale to shrink back down then please contact us, so that we can advise you how to do this without damaging the bag.

Baillie Haylage High Fibre, Traditional Parkland Meadow and Meadow Grass are suitable for some laminitics. All three varieties are medium to low energy and, therefore, have lower sugar and energy (calorie) content compared to the Ryegrass and Ryegrass & Timothy products. As with all horses and ponies prone to laminitis, we recommend following the advice of your vet, introducing any changes to their diet slowly and monitoring them closely.

Each variety of Baillie Haylage contains some species of ryegrass, as do most grazing paddocks. These species along with the other grasses used in our haylage are specifically selected, grown and harvested to produce distinct varieties with different energy levels and nutritional benefits; meaning there is a Baillie Haylage product suitable for all horses and ponies.

If you are changing Baillie Haylage varieties, or from another forage to Baillie Haylage, we recommend introducing your horse or pony to the new forage slowly. This can be done by mixing the new forage with the old for a couple of days to allow your horse or pony to fully transition, without making sudden changes to their diet.

Influences such as variable soil and weather conditions can cause some differences, for example colour and texture, across each of the Baillie Haylage varieties. To provide a product which is as consistent as possible, all Baillie Haylage products are batch coded to allow full traceability. This enables us to package the correct type of forage for horses and ponies’ different dietary requirements.

If, however, your haylage does not look or smell as it usually does and this causes you concern then please contact Baillie Haylage if you bought it direct, or the stockist you purchased it from.

Typically, Baillie Haylage medium and large bales last 5-7 days when open or up 10 days during winter, whereas handy bales will last 3-5 days. Due to the nature of the product, the haylage will last longer when opened in cooler weather than in warm weather.

In the summer months, when the haylage is young and the weather is hot, it is not uncommon for your haylage to heat up. In such instances, we recommend removing the plastic and spreading the haylage out.
