I have used Baillie haylage for many years, specifically the High Fibre or Meadow Grass handy bales. We opt for a medium to low energy haylage as my 4* eventer is very highly strung, an extremely fussy eater and can struggle with the dust element of hay. The quality is always fantastic and never changeable from the first bale to the last. Kellypsa has never looked as well and held her weight as well as when she does on the High Fibre handy bales. As the energy level of the haylage never fluctuates, it also makes it much easier to carefully monitor energy levels through hard feed where required.

We have three horses that we have had from youngsters and are now approaching their twenties. Now, finally, to everyone's relief, the temperature warms, the rain slows and the sun shines (a bit) and I would like to thank your team for Baillie Haylage High Fibre. I have used this haylage for my three hairy cobs, Billy, Ben and Connie, throughout the Winter. Billy has developed an unfortunate allergy to hay and pollen and he becomes quite ill if he eats a large amount of hay. Ben, on the other hand, will eat ANYTHING but puts on weight eating NOTHING. I searched for a product to suit them all, as they are all together, mostly out 24/7 and discovered Baillie Haylage High Fibre. This obviously suits Billy but also does not pile on the pounds for Ben. All three horses have done so well on this haylage and look great and are very happy. The haylage is consistently of excellent quality and it suits my ponies.

We have used Baillie Haylage for many years. The horses love it and from our point of view it keeps them looking very well and mentally in good order. The haylage is always great consistent quality and the team at Baillie Haylage is always very helpful.

If you are interested in becoming a stockist of Baillie Haylage please contact us with the details of your shop and we will get back to you.
Baillie Haylage Handy Bales do not pull apart in slices, however, if you open a bale by slitting it down the long side then the haylage will pull apart easily.
Baillie Haylage Medium and Large Bales are best opened by creating a flap in the plastic; to do this cut down the ether side and along the bottom of the end of a bale. Once the strings have been cut the bale will easily pull apart in slices and the flap will protect the haylage from the elements.
In hot weather and when haylage is young handy bale bags may expand or ‘blow up’. This is very normal behaviour for the haylage and the bale will shrink back down as the weather cools without altering the quality of the product.
If you prefer to ‘vent’ the gas from the bag rather than waiting for the bale to shrink back down then please contact us, so that we can advise you how to do this without damaging the bag.
Baillie Haylage orders can be paid for by cash, cheque, debit or credit card or by BACS. Flexible payment terms can be applied to large orders, please speak to the team about this.
All Baillie Haylage bales can be stored inside or outside, though we advise keeping them out of direct sunlight in the hot summer months. We do not recommend manoeuvring the medium and large bales and suggest they are left on the pallets they are delivered on.
Bales must be kept free of damage; particular care must be taken to ensure accidental damaged cannot be caused by birds, rodents, dogs or cats.
Baillie Haylage High Fibre, Traditional Parkland Meadow and Meadow Grass are suitable for some laminitics. All three varieties are medium to low energy and, therefore, have lower sugar and energy (calorie) content compared to the Ryegrass and Ryegrass & Timothy products. For further details, please view the Nutritional Information for the Baillie Haylage range.
As with all horses and ponies prone to laminitis, we recommend following the advice of your vet, introducing any changes to their diet slowly and monitoring them closely.
Baillie Haylage is available in three bale sizes:
Each variety of Baillie Haylage contains some species of ryegrass, as do most grazing paddocks. These species along with the other grasses used in our haylage are specifically selected, grown and harvested to produce distinct varieties with different energy levels and nutritional benefits; meaning there is a Baillie Haylage product suitable for all horses and ponies.

If you are changing Baillie Haylage varieties, or from another forage to Baillie Haylage, we recommend introducing your horse or pony to the new forage slowly. This can be done by mixing the new forage with the old for a couple of days to allow your horse or pony to fully transition, without making sudden changes to their diet.
Influences such as variable soil and weather conditions can cause some differences, for example colour and texture, across each of the Baillie Haylage varieties. To provide a product which is as consistent as possible, all Baillie Haylage products are batch coded to allow full traceability. This enables us to package the correct type of forage for horses and ponies’ different dietary requirements.
If, however, your haylage does not look or smell as it usually does and this causes you concern then please contact Baillie Haylage if you bought it direct, or the stockist you purchased it from.
Typically, Baillie Haylage medium and large bales last 5-7 days when open or up 10 days during winter, whereas handy bales will last 3-5 days. Due to the nature of the product, the haylage will last longer when opened in cooler weather than in warm weather.
In the summer months, when the haylage is young and the weather is hot, it is not uncommon for your haylage to heat up. In such instances, we recommend removing the plastic and spreading the haylage out.
